Dual Pixel CMOS AF II covering Approx. 100% Area with 1,053 AF Areas.
High-speed Focusing with Dual Pixel CMOS AF
The EOS R5 camera’s highly responsive Dual Pixel CMOS AF system features an incredible 1,053 Automatic AF zones that can be designated as auto-focus focal points (when Face + Tracking priority AF is selected). This ensures higher-precision Eye Detection AF, or allows for you to focus on the desired AF point.Fast action can be captured and focus can be maintained with speed, accuracy and ease.
AF Area Coverage of Approx. 100% x 100%^2
The EOS R5 camera features an expansive focus area of approx. 100% horizontal and 100% vertical^2 when workingwith select RF and EF lenses. With older EF lenses, or with Extender types I and II, the EOS R5 focuses on approx. 80% horizontally and 80% verticallyof the image. This means fast and impressive focusing even when composing your subject far from the center of the frame.
^2When takingstill photos. Actual coverage varies depending on the lens in use.Focus area will not be covered with the following RF lenses: RF600mm F11 IS STM, RF800mm F11 IS STM.
EV -6^3Low-light Autofocus
Amazingfor nighttime photography or in very low lightsettings, the EOS R5 camera’s brilliant AF can operate in light asdim as a light rating of EV -6^3 where other AF systems may fail or search. Phenomenal AF is achieved even when using lenses with high F numbers. This ultra-sensitive AF works together with the EOS R5’s EVF to clearly capture subjects even when lightis limited.Combined with the EOS R5 camera’s remarkable low-light AF performance, still and video shooting is possible even in dark situations ina variety of places and occasions.
^3Camera settings: Center AF point, normal temperature, One-shot AF, ISO 100.
Subject tracking of People and Animals*2 using Deep Learning Technology.
Head and Eye Detection
The EOS R5 camera brings head and eye detection to a new level. Even in situations where a camera may struggleto detect asubject, the EOS R5 camera can locate and a person’s head or eye when people detection is set, allowing ease and accuracy when capturing videos or still images, or while in Live View mode.
Animal Detection*2
For the first time in a Canon Mirrorless camera, animal detection is now possible. Developed using deep learning technology, the EOS R5 cameracan effectively track the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds for speed and precision – regardless of the animal’s size, posture, or orientation of the face.
*2 Effectiveness varies depending on the subject. In some cases, dogs, cats or birds may not be detected, while some animals other than dogs, cats or birds may be detected.

Adds support for outputting 8K/30p/10-bit video signals for ProRes RAW recording to ATOMOS’s Ninja V+ recorder*3 via HDMI.
Adds support for movie recording when the camera is connected to the CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S or CN-E70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S EF cinema lenses.
Still photography shooting is possible however performance is not guaranteed.
Movie shooting in vertical position is possible however performance is not guaranteed.
External power supply is required for AF operation during servo zoom operation. When there is no external power supply, AF operation is activated only when the servo zoom is not in use.
Adds simultaneous movie recording capability on card 1 and card 2, however RAW movies and RAW(Light) movies cannot be recorded simultaneously on card 1 and card 2.
Adds support for the VPG 400 (Video Performance Guarantee Profile), a standard based on the CFexpress 2.0 specification.
Improves operation stability when using the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF600mm F4 L IS USM.
Additional fixes:
Fixes an issue in which, during HDMI connection, if the camera’s screen turns off, a zebra pattern is displayed via the HDMI output.
Fixes an issue in which sufficient image stabilization effects may not be attained immediately after the start of shooting.
